A sublime opener finished by Antonio Valencia and a ridiculous debut goal from substitute   Javier Hernandez put United 2-0 up.

Salomon Kalou pulled a goal back late on and double-winning Chelsea threatened to level before Dimitar Berbatov sealed their fate in stoppage time.

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic is confident the Community Shield trophy is not the only silverware the club will be laying hands on.

He said after the game: "I believe there will be more (trophies) - this is just the beginning."I think we have a good squad and showed today we have energy and showed some hunger."

The Serbia central defender added on Sky Sports: "I think we did well today. Some players who haven't played a lot pre-season had time to build up their fitness and they did well."Dimitar had a lot of pressure last year and we hope this year we will score more goals."

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It was a decent display and I'm very happy players such as Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Park Ji-sung are nearer match fitness."Some of the football was very good at times. I think we deserved to win it.

"I don't know if Wayne and Park are ready yet. The internationals in the coming week are a bonus for them and I'm delighted they are involved. Michael doesn't have that problem but we'll step up his training."We've got so many players away but having the (first Premier League) game (against Newcastle) on the Monday helps us.

"I don't think anyone can understand why we've got an international friendly before the season starts but we've been given a bit of luck through that."

On Hernandez's goal, the Scot joked : "He'll not try it again - it was a quite peculiar goal.full highlights here

"But he's quick to get in the box - he's a really good finisher. He's got a bubbly character and speaks good English. He's settled in very well."
